I take a lot of stuff apart but I’m always mindful of the risk vs benefit. A lot of these instagram heroes that take every little thing apart break more shit than you realize. I know because I see it first hand. This particular piece had wires and bolts that were not accessible without potentially damaging some custom interior parts. So being a skilled wrapper I decided to take a bunch of measurements and create my own template in DAP. Took two attempts but it came out perfect. Bulk/template hybrid piece. No damage. Been excited to make this post! Over the years I have trained on and used several brands of windshield protective films. Some are easier to install than others but the technology just isn’t there. I’ve seen them scratch, discolor, delaminate, distort vision etc. some brands even were taken off the market. After some time and research I have found one that meets my expectations. For those of you about to say “but we get free replacements in Florida!” We only get 1 a year. And after working in the auto industry for 20years, dealing with dent repair guys, body shops etc I can tell you that damaging your vehicle is a high probability. I’ve seen several teslas go to the service center for a replacement and come back with new damage. When it comes to higher end vehicles the cost of the glass can get exponentially higher. Even if insurance covers all of it they will slide in a premium increase and call it something else. All for a simple chip that can turn into a crack that would have been prevented with a windshield skin. If you are looking for a solid windshield protection option I got you covered. Let’s talk about teslas and white cars. No matter how shitty your PPF install is, it’s going to look good on day 1. Because the edges are not caked with dirt. At 6 months you’re going to see every edge on this car. Like someone took a black crayon and outlined your car. There IS a way to clean this to look like day 1, but that’s not the point. I’m still a detailer at heart. And I install with that in mind. I go to great lengths to tuck every edge. So while cleaning your mitt or towel isn’t dragging across the edge for it to collect dirt. Now the Tesla part. For some strange reason people go to great lengths to capture the Tesla crowd. 100% of the crazy low prices I see are for teslas. 100% of the people trying to beat me up on price or tell me they are “shopping around” are Tesla people. You are not going to get this level of professional installs through those cheap Installers. You’re just not. Teslas are not difficult to wrap. Probably why the noobs and hacks foam at the damn mouth trying to get them in the door. Just remember skilled labor is not “cheap.” And cheap labor is not skilled. Customer wanted the beadlock rims to match the color of her Jeep. So I took the paint code, got the color mixed up, sanded, primed, painted and 2k clear coat. #protip : when doing full cars start top down. It cuts down all the additional wipe down. 2- develop your plan your attack for each day. Know what time you’re going to start and how long each panel is going to take. 3- most importantly do the panels you like the least FIRST. Make sure what limited brain cells you have left are giving your most difficult task for the day all their juice attention and whatever drugs you take to get through the day. 4- when wrapping roofs don’t waste time with kits. It’s too much stretch, pulling and manhandling the film. Draw a box around the roof kit. Ungroup everything. Group the antenna hole and the box you drew together and delete the rest. Start at the antenna and lock it down. Then it’s easy squeegee and low tension from there. Lock your edges with alcohol/water mix and utilize good knife skills. You want to leave about 3mm to wrap over the edge and behind any gaskets. What you’ll have left is a flawless install with no marks, adhesive disturbances or visible edges. Most people don’t know that #xpel makes a super durable film that’s textured like BEDLINER. I use this stuff in Jeep door sills and in this case a beat up truck. Preferably you’d want to put it on before the scratches but it definitely looks better and is functional. You want real life instead of fake social media clout? Here it is. After digging into the prep of this 8yr old truck I wish I had turned it down. It had dents (removed now) sap, scratches, chips, rough paint, flaking pin stripes, fading headlights. The matte film is a definite improvement. And being a 2015 the only kits I used were for the bumpers. And two front fenders. The entire rest of the truck is bulk install. The customer is super happy with it. BUT proper communication and setting expectations are key if you’re going to do a job like this. I wrapped this a while back and the door and rear panel had an excessive amount of debris in some areas. You know why? Cause I’m not perfect, and shit happens. But I stand by my work and I prioritize quality. So I steamed off the old film and installed the new. Bulking larger panels means less shifting and repositioning which is a sure fire way to introduce debris. So not using the kit this time it went down faster and cleaner.
